Dana Milbank – Sweeteners for the South

November 22, 2009

And so it came to pass that Landrieu walked onto the Senate floor midafternoon Saturday to announce her aye vote — and to trumpet the financial “fix” she had arranged for Louisiana. “I am not going to be defensive,” she declared. “And it’s not a $100 million fix. It’s a $300 million fix.”…

Landrieu and Lincoln got the attention because they were the last to decide, but the Senate really has 100 Blanche DuBoises, a full house of characters inclined toward the narcissistic.

more fun in the Washington Post.

David S. Broder – David Broder: Fears of health-reform cost are justifiable

November 22, 2009

David Broder: deficit hawk? When you’ve lost DB, you’ve lost the right of left of center of the mainstream media.

Republican Scozzafava Drops Out of New York Congressional Race – FOXNews.com.  More on this later, but I’m pleased to hear that the voice of the people is being heard.  If a conservative can run as a conservative and be competitive in New York, then why not elsewhere?  Why do conservatives have to settle for second, third, or worse from the GOP?  I’m going to break out the big stick on a certain local radio host who has been very critical of the Hoffman campaign and those who have chosen to support him, but for now I’m just going to be happy for a little while.

Another Home Run for Mr. Card

October 26, 2009

The term ‘Card check’ is beginning to take on an entirely new meaning.  Money quote:

Whether you’re a serf to management or to union leaders makes little difference to the serf.

Welcome Back, Orson

October 26, 2009

A man who knows how to call a spade a shovel:

You’ll notice that I have no qualms about insulting the extremists of the Left, but that’s because there is no way to win them over anyway. They are incapable of learning or even listening; they are contemptuous of logic or evidence; having learned all the things that “smart people” say, they just go on saying them without any sign that they are actually aware of the utter vapidity of their own dogmas.

This comes from a man who identifies himself as a Democrat.  He’s a generation ahead of me, so I can only assume that this meant something different in the past than it does now.  I don’t identify with the Republican party, but I can never in a million years imagine myself as a Democrat given their current state and those they sleep with.

What he said…via Daily Pundit.

All of this springs from a basic misperception: the GOP establishment believes that conservative principles are not a winning platform.

Lame Gray Lady: NYT Scrubs Major Portion of Original Obama-Olympics Article, Inserts Meeting with McChrystal | NewsBusters.org

October 5, 2009

Lame Gray Lady: NYT Scrubs Major Portion of Original Obama-Olympics Article, Inserts Meeting with McChrystal | NewsBusters.org.  We are at war with Oceania.  We have always been at war with Oceania.

I try not to wave the Orwell flag too often for a variety of reasons, but this truly rises to that level in my book.  If you publish a story online, then that story should be treated as a print story would for corrections of fact. Wholesale revision of a story after publication is unwise at best and stinks of cronyism.

It has traditionally been one of the arguments of mainstream media that the internet is an untrustworthy source of news because there are no standards for how that information will be handled.  It appears that the critics may have been correct.

Hat tip to Reynolds.

Sense of Events: The Mae West presidency

October 5, 2009

Donald Sensing has some great analysis of the Obama administration:

I think what we are witnessing is a combination of two factors: A Mae West personality coupled with, The return of the Peter PrincipleWe have here a Mae West presidency, which I illustrate with two quotes of the platinum blondeshell:1. It’s better to be looked over than overlooked.2. There’s no such thing as bad publicity.

I don’t think this is the complete answer, but it’s a great start.
