Airbrushing out Mary Jo Kopechne by Mark Steyn on National Review Online

Airbrushing out Mary Jo Kopechne by Mark Steyn on National Review Online.  Steyn, as usual, cuts to the heart of the matter: “If a towering giant cares so much about humanity in general, why get hung up on his carelessness with humans in particular?”

John Mackey: The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare – WSJ.com.  Mackey makes a lot of solid points and this is worth reading on its own.  It’s even more interesting when you consider the uproar from the fringe left when one of ‘their’ institutions goes off the reservation.

Servility and freedom « The Truth in Black and Right

Read it.  NOW!  This man is preaching the truth if people have ears to hear.  I normally include a quote, but it’s such good stuff that there’s no obvious part to pick out except the very end; and there’s certainly no need to rush.

How Much Is That Clunker in the Window? by Jonah Goldberg on National Review Online.

… with the $4,500 subsidy, not all of these customers are going to be paying cash for their new cars. So they’ll be swapping serviceable-but-paid-for cars for nicer cars that are owned by banks.

Am I the only one to whom this sounds like the same sort of ‘incentives’ provided for poor home buyers that encouraged them to purchase homes that they couldn’t afford and led directly to the real estate bubble?  Don’t these idiots ever learn?

CNSNews.com – Conyers Sees No Point in Members Reading 1,000-Page Health Care Bill–Unless They Have 2 Lawyers to Interpret It for Them

August 6, 2009

CNSNews.com – Conyers Sees No Point in Members Reading 1,000-Page Health Care Bill–Unless They Have 2 Lawyers to Interpret It for Them.

“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill,’” said Conyers.  “What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?”

Mr. Conyers, I direct your attention to the following words:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.

You may recall them as the oath of office that you have taken every two years since your election to the House of Representatives in 1964.  It is remarkably similar to the oath of office required for all active and reserve military personnel; in which capacities you served for much of the 1950’s.

How sir, can you vote aye or nay on any piece of legislation which you have not read and still fulfill your oath of office?

Belmont Club » The murky future of healthcare.  My dear wife sent me this link and it’s got some really good ideas.  He’s a doctor, and I’m not, but aside from one appalling arithmetic error (10k x 25m does not equal 250m) it seems to make a lot of sense.  I have heard from a variety of other sources that part of the problem with our physician distribution is that MediCare payments actually encouraged a growth in specialists so we can argue about the need for more GP’s vs more specialists later, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of his ideas overall.
